MESSAGE NOTES
The Big Idea: Paul anticipates difficult questions about election.
Question #1 – Doesn’t election mean that God is unjust?
Question #2 – Doesn’t election mean humans are not responsible?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
What are some difficult questions to last week’s teachings about election?
Digging Deeper:
1) The first question is whether election denies the righteousness of God. God is just (see Genesis 18:25; Psalm 50:6). However, justice is not the only category within which God operates. What other category is described in the verse following? Why is this important?
2) Some argue that the presence of grace in a person’s life depends on that person’s choice. If this were the case, the question in verse 14 and the assertion in verse 16 would lose meaning. Discuss.
3) After using the example of Pharaoh, Paul asserts that God has mercy on whomever He wills, and He hardens whomever He will (v. 18). What is the difference between ACTIVE and PASSIVE hardening and why is it important?
4) “Double Predestination” does NOT mean that God is only concerned with a predestination to eternal life. It also does NOT mean that God causes faith in some and unbelief in others. What is the biblical doctrine of double predestination?
Taking it Home: Continue to ask God for those who do not yet know Christ personally. Whatever it takes, Lord, increase my distress for perishing unbelievers, the persecuted church, and destitute poor and my resolve to do what I can to bring them deliverance and relief through the whole gospel of Christ.
9 is about election, 10 about responsibility. Justice is giving what is rightly deserved, reward OR punishment. NON-justice is withholding what is rightly deserved or giving what is not deserved. (Justice or Mercy)
Never think God isn't powerful enough or start judging God. God used the resistance with Pharaoh to birth the Nation of Israel
Romans 8:28
